On August 31st, the Secretariat organized an online briefing session to discuss on the documents for the Fifth Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Zhang Xin, Vice President of CCAIA attended the meeting. The meeting reported on the proposed provisional agenda for the Fifth Conference of the Parties, amendments to Annexes A and B and other Annex B matters, financial resources and mechanisms, effectiveness evaluation, mercury emissions, releases of mercury, thresholds for mercury waste, international cooperation and coordination, program of work and budget, financial rules, and other meeting items. Main points included amending the first part of Annex A by adding eight mercury-containing products, modifying the second part of Annex A by adding regulations for the treatment of dental amalgam, deciding to consider the phase-out date of four mercury-containing products at the Fifth Conference of the Parties, deciding to consider adding polyurethane produced using mercury catalysts to Part I of Annex B at the Fifth Conference of the Parties, reviewing a brief report on the technical and economic feasibility of using non-mercury alternatives for producing VCM, sodium methoxide, potassium methoxide, or acetate, and considering their technical and economic feasibility.
